Root Vegetables and Their Benefits
I personally like to make a variety of teas and juices with these roots. Many can also be used in delicious recipes.
(Only to name a few of my favorites.)
Beets
High in fiber and a great source of multiple vitamins and minerals, good source of nutrients, and many plant compounds.
Beets are all around good for you. This root can help lower blood pressure. It helps to bring inflammation down and helps to improve digestive and brain health. It may even help with weight loss. With its antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory nature, it helps to prevent cancer. Believe it or not, beetroots also help with athletic performance, especially high-intensity endurance exercise.
Burdock Root also known as Gobo
Has lots of minerals and fiber. It is used for anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.
This root may purify one's blood, treat colds and reduce fever. It can kill germs and bacteria. It's also taken to treat cancer, anorexia, joint pain from arthritis, bladder infections, and GI discomfort. It can also help treat skin conditions such as, eczema, acne, and psoriasis.
Celery Root also known as Celeriac (Low in FODMAPs)
Many different vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber
It supports both bone and blood health, promotes gut health, aids with weight-loss, repairs cell damage, may help with stress, helps to suppress Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
Ginger
Ginger is not just a great add-in flavor to foods, but is also has powerful medicinal properties
Another great anti-inflammatory for any part of the body (GI, headaches, cramps). It may help prevent stomach ulcers. It reduces gas and painful spasms, as well as nausea. It can also help regulate blood sugar. It’s know to also improve brain functions and fight diseases.
Sunchokes- Jerusalem Artichoke
High in Vitamin C, potassium, protein, and iron. Acts as a prebiotic.
Sunchokes help to lower high blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and helps with blood glucose levels. Helps with blood formation (from being high in copper and iron). It boosts the immune system and is good for the digestive tract.
Yucca- Is also known as cassava, yuca, Brazilian arrowroot
Yucca has high amounts of Vitamin C and loaded with antioxidants
This root protects against oxidative stress, promotes healthy skin, helps to relieve arthritis pain, boosts immune system, may reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Daikon also known as Mooli- White Chinese Radish
There are many excellent nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and minerals. It’s very high in vitamin C. Helps to build immunity, helps digestive issues, is a natural source of detox, helps to lower cancer risk.
Lotus Root
Full of nutrients and minerals
It helps reduce stress and high blood pressure. It’s known to boost digestion with all its fiber. It helps to prevent water retention. It is know to help hay fever and promote weight loss, and help with regulating menstrual cycle. Good for hair and skin (including acne).
Taro Root
Antioxidant- Great source of fiber and other nutrients. Great flavor in ice cream, smoothies, and cake. (Yum!)
Taro root can lower blood sugar, as well as high blood pressure. It may also reduce the risk of heart disease. It’s also known to reduce cancer risk of many types. It’s good for the GI tract and can also help with weight loss. It’s a great immunity booster.
Galanga
Rich in antioxidants to fight diseases and protect cells. Galanga is part of the ginger family and looks similar to ginger, but acts more as turmeric. (Great for Thai cooking.)
It’s know to lower blood sugar, help with high cholesterol, and helps improve memory. It’s also known to help protect from certain cancers. May fight inflammation and pain. May also help treat infections. This root helps build immune system. It can also boost male fertility.
Nagaimo- Mountain Asian Yam
This yam helps to reduce high blood pressure, helps to balance digestion, with its natural enzymes. It has shown to lower cholesterol levels and known to relieve fatigue.
Turmeric
One of the most known anti-inflammatories. When digesting turmeric, always take with ginger or black pepper for better absorption.
Turmeric’s anti-infammatory helps with pain, aids with digestion, and lowers blood sugar. It repairs stem-cells in the brain, boosts immunity, and is a natural antiseptic for cuts and burns. Turmeric may also reverse alzheimers.
